What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Cocoa always talks about how our technicians are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it truly mean?

NATE is the acronym for North American Technician Excellence and, as stated on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all technicians in the industry are required to be certified through NATE. The certification is optional and technicians can service heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment without being certified by NATE.

It’s important to Service Experts that our experts are NATE-certified to ensure we are sending the most qualified and professional technicians into your home. To make sure technicians meet these criteria, the NATE-certification exams validate real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these subjects.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only certain areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE exam candidates may obtain installation and/or service certification in one or more of the skill areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
