How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important duty as your furnace prepares to heat your space.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t working correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may note short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
