Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that provides financial support to those in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors various recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil suffered a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors feared that he would eventually be restricted to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial pressure on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a device that uses functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they were not able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.

Luckily, a professional at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
