Common Furnace Problems in Melbourne

January 09, 2017

We’ve gone over some of Melbourne’s common heating and furnace problems in the past, but we’re back with a couple more issues that could cause your heating system to go out in the middle of this awful cold.

Lack of Maintenance

Not only does seasonal heating maintenance help your furnace run up to 30% more efficiently and increase the lifespan of the equipment, it’s also demanded by most manufacturers to continue your equipment’s warranty. For both of these reasons, you should really invest in annual furnace tune-ups. Catching minor issues early can help prevent them from becoming huge (expensive!) furnace problems.

System Wear and Tear

If you’re running your heating system all winter long to keep warm, normal wear and tear on the elements is to be expected – especially in older heating equipment. Stress on your belts and bearings can cause the equipment to overheat or result in issues with the fan motors, causing air flow problems.

Clogged Air Filters

If you use a conventional furnace air filter, you should be swaping it out monthly. If you forget, it not only affects the air your family is breathing, the dirt and bacteria buildup could cause air flow restrictions inside the furnace equipment. This will cause your furnace to work much harder to warm your home, potentially putting too much wear and tear on the components and, in turn, raising your heating bills .

Thermostat Malfunctions

Your thermostat is the gadget that tells your heating equipment when it’s time to turn on and fill your home with warm air, and when it’s time to shut off. If the thermostat is not set or working accurately, it could cause your furnace to turn on and off every few minutes, going all day long, or not turning on at all.
